#repost @westcornwallwildlife A couple of our rehabbed gulls here hanging around in the sun with a large group of other Juveniles and young adults. We are always please to see them integrating into a group in this way and delighted that having been raised by humans they have now learned to keep their distance, which is always the safest place for them. Some young gulls are completely independent as soon as they fledge others hang around their parents for as long as they will allow it. Many gulls need extra support as food supplies are limited due to loss of habitat and ever changing human practices. It was good to see people really enjoying feeding the birds on the lake, Including herring gulls (the only conservation redlisted species on the lake), geese, swans, black headed gulls, tufted ducks and mallard ducks. Many rare species stop off here and most people enjoy, respect and care for the wildlife on the park. However we do also get regular reports of mostly young people scaring, chasing and being violent towards the birds here, in fact there have been CCTV cameras put up specifically to watch over the wildlife. The police are aware of the problems faced here and if anyone sees anyone threatening or worse still attacking wildlife please call the police immediately and report it as a “Wildlife Crime” 999 if in progress and 101 if not. Having the BTO British Trust for Ornithology rings on some of our gulls means that we are able to track their progress and movements, many do not hang around and one was recently spotted in Pembrokshire and another in Dorset. Not all the ringed gulls have been rehabbed by us as the ringing is part of a long term programme by the BTO West Cornwall ringing group, which is yielding some very interesting findings… the more we know the more we can understand and protect our wonderful wildlife for future generations. If you would like to help us further please see our website for many ways to get involved. https://ift.tt/3eE7GCl and if you see a ringed gull please report your sighting to the BTO via their website https://ift.tt/3g4WTTj

Looking out for the moon tonight… A full moon occurs when the Moon is 180-degrees from the Sun with the Earth in between. It appears full to the naked eye for about three nights. I try to never miss an opportunity to post an Owl and the Moon as they seem.to go so well together 🤍🌚🤍🌚🤍🌚🤍 #moon #fullmoon #firstfullmoonof2021 #januartmoon #wintermoon # #quietmoon #icemoon #wolfmoon #mooncycles #lunarcalender #owlandthemoon # #lunamonth

A little while ago I had the pleasure of caring for an injured wild Goose. So I have chosen the Goose as my focus for this months Tales From Hilldide Farm. If you would you like to read about Geese? This 28 page ebook is out and it’s all FREE to anyone who subscribes if you want it…its a gathering of poems, stories and folklore. This is undoubtedly my favourite poem… “Wild Geese” by Mary Oliver You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting— over and over announcing your place in the family of things. On Burns night I must also mention this poem included in this months ebook… Winter: A Dirge by Robert Burns (1781) The wintry west extends his blast, And hail and rain does blaw; Or the stormy north sends driving forth The blinding sleet and snaw: While, tumbling brown, the burn comes down, And roars frae bank to brae; And bird and beast in covert rest, And pass the heartless day. “The sweeping blast, the sky o’ercast,” The joyless winter day Let others fear, to me more dear Than all the pride of May: The tempest’s howl, it soothes my soul, My griefs it seems to join; The leafless trees my fancy please, Their fate resembles mine! Thou Power Supreme, whose mighty scheme These woes of mine fulfil, Here firm I rest; they must be best, Because they are Thy will! Then all I want-O do Thou grant This one request of mine!- Since to enjoy Thou dost deny, Assist me to resign #burnsnight #robbieburns #robbieburnspoem
